<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">NEW YORK (MarketWatch) | <span style="background-color: white; color: #555555; font-size: 18px; line-height: 25px;">Published: </span><span style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; font-size: 18px; line-height: 25px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Nov 14, 2014</span><span style="line-height: 1.5;">– Despite further evidence of a shrinking watch market, analysts say Apple has nothing to fear ahead of its smart watch launch this spring.<br /></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Apple will sell millions of units as expected, they say, even as the market for more traditional accessories (the wearables of yesteryear) continues to decline.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Morningstar consumer analyst Paul Swinand said he “rolls his eyes” at chatter of whether Apple Watch will be impacted by weak mechanical watch sales, or vice versa. Accessories, he said, have been losing steam for years. Watches have been in a decline for at least the last year and a half.<br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">While traditional watch sales are expected to slow by another 3.1% to $63.9 billion globally this year, sales of wearable electronics are forecast to more than quadruple this year to $2.5 billion and rise to $8.5 billion by 2015, according to market researcher Euromonitor.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Shares of Movado Group tumbled 29% on Friday after it predicted further slowdowns in watch sales and axed its full-year outlook well below expectations. But analysts expect Apple to sell anywhere from 10 million to 50 million or more units in its first year.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></strong><strong style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 6px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></strong>“We believe consumers’ appetite for Apple Watch will surprise the skeptics next year,” Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White said in a recent note to clients.The first wave of Apple Watch sales is expected to be comprised largely of early tech adopters and Apple loyalists. But even if fewer-than-expected units are sold, Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves said it would be less a function of weak demand and more a sign the technology failed to meet lofty expectations.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">“If a slowdown in the watch market impacted Apple Watch sales, it would suggest the watch was failing its grander ambition,” he said.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If anything, Apple may have trouble entering such a fragmented market, Swinand said. There are dozens of smart bands on the market already, including Galaxy Gear, which is manufactured by Apple adversary Samsung Electronics. Several of them have flopped.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Of course, some of the slowdown in the traditional watch market might because some people are holding off for the Apple Watch and other similar smart bands.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">But Bulova Corp. president Gregory Thumm in a recent email to MarketWatch was sure to distinguish between the two.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">“Wearing a wrist watch is much less about timekeeping, than it is a cultural phenomenon,” he said. “It is like a neck tie or a handbag.”</span></div>

After roughly five months <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/18/this-is-motorolas-new-android-wear-smartwatch-moto-360/">since being unveiled</a>, the Moto 360 is due to hit the consumer market at last, one that's been so patiently awaiting its arrival. Starting today at noon ET, those of you in the States can order your very own for $250, from Motorola's website, Google Play and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/08/17/moto-360-appears-at-best-buy/">Best Buy</a> (both online and at retail stores). That's not it, though, since <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/08/14/motorola-chicago-event/">Motorola also revealed</a> that its circular <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/03/android-wear-review/">Android Wear</a> watch in metallic flavors will be coming later this fall -- although those sleeker silver and black options are set to be priced for $50 more than its leather counterparts. That said, Motorola does want early adopters to feel blanketed, so it's making the metal, swappable bands available separately for $80 a piece. Across other parts of the world, meanwhile, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/19/moto-360-designer/">Moto 360 smartwatch</a> is going to hit the UK in "early October" for £199, and Canada in the fall for $279. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/04/lg-g-watch-r-hands-on/">Your move, LG</a>.</span></div>

<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Detroit's Dilemma : The American automotive industry isn’t as resistant to innovation as it once was. But Detroit’s big three automakers have their cost structures to deal with, their reputations to think about, and (lately) their <a href="http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2014/01/detroit-big-three-expected-to-hand-out-record-profit-sharing/" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">profits to protect</a>. So anything too risky is going to be a hard sell.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text-2 text parbase section" style="background-color: white; color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It doesn’t get much more risky than a technology that would turn cars into robots and <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/05/28/google_self_driving_car_prototype_driverless_car_could_change_transportation.html" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;">end driving as we know it</a>.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text-3 text parbase section" style="background-color: white;">
<div style="color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It’s no wonder, then, that Google and Detroit haven’t found much common ground in their early discussions about self-driving car collaborations, as <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/30/us-google-detroit-insight-idUSKBN0F50C320140630" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Reuters’ Alexei Oreskovich and Ben Klayman reported Monday</a>:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 28px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In one meeting, both sides were enthusiastic about the futuristic technology, yet it soon became clear that they would not be working together. The Internet search company and the automaker disagreed on almost every point, from car capabilities and time needed to get it to market to extent of collaboration. It was as if the two were “talking a different language,” recalls one person who was present.</span></span><br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<br />
<div class="text parbase text-5 section" style="color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">That’s an apt metaphor. Detroit automakers speak the language of established industry leaders, trafficking in terms like profit margins, brand image, and liability. Google, despite its size, still deals in the conceptual vocabulary of a tech startup: blank slates, prototypes, moonshots—and, yes, disruption.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="text text-6 parbase section" style="color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Clayton Christensen’s shopworn theory <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/technology/2014/06/clayton_christensen_and_disruptive_innovation_is_the_concept_a_myth.html" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;">has its limitations</a>, but it’s not a bad lens through which to view the sort of bind in which Google’s self-driving car technology could place companies like Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Unlike <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/chapter/christensen.htm" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">classic examples of disruptive technologies</a>, self-driving cars are likely to be more expensive than human-driven versions, at least initially. But the long-term vision of the self-driving car involves moving from an ownership model to a service model, in which large numbers of people simply call cars whenever they want them. One Google patent even suggests that retailers could offer potential customers <a href="http://bgr.com/2014/01/24/google-self-driving-car-patent/" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">a free ride to their store</a> in exchange for bombarding them with ads. That implies an existential threat to Detroit’s entire business model, from production to marketing to distribution and sales. </span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="text parbase text-7 section" style="color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If Detroit automakers were certain that this were the future, they would have little choice but to begin preparing, even at great cost to their existing businesses. If<a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2013/09/03/burning_platform_stephen_elop_comes_to_microsoft.html" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;">your platform is burning</a>, it’s better to jump ship than go down with it. The catch is that it’s far too early to tell whether Google’s radical vision of a driverless society will catch on. It would be rash, bordering on suicidal, for a company like Ford to invest heavily in fully driverless technology today only to see the market—or regulators—reject it tomorrow.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text parbase text-8 section" style="color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Instead, the automakers are looking to Google and other tech companies for incremental improvements to their existing products, like <a href="http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1092960_ford-and-intel-use-facial-recognition-to-improve-in-car-tech-safety" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">in-car technology</a>, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303942404579360972335289080" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">crash-avoidance systems</a>, or <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/168194-fords-amazing-new-tech-park-your-car-from-outside-the-car" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">automated parallel parking</a>.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text parbase text-9 section" style="color: #281b21; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px;">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">But Google has become increasingly convinced that such half-measures are a poor substitute for fully autonomous driving technology. The more you’re forced to rely on the human behind the wheel, the fewer benefits you derive from self-driving software. Only when every car is automated will a crash-free (not to mention hands-free) world be possible.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">That, of course, is anathema to an industry built on near-universal car ownership and romantic images of the relationship between car, driver, and road. It would also threaten to reduce the automakers to mere hardware manufacturers—the Motorolas and Foxconns of the transportation industry. Building dumb chassis and drivetrains for Google’s smart cars is not GM’s idea of a bright future.</span></div>
<div class="text-11 text parbase section">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And while self-driving cars might offer the only path to a crash-free world, there’s also the chance they’ll introduce entirely new safety hazards, like system malfunctions or malicious hacks that lead to pileups of unprecedented proportions. As one industry representative told Reuters of Google’s fully autonomous driving software: “We’re not going to put our name on a project like that, because if something goes wrong, we have a lot more to lose.”</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text-12 text parbase section">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">That’s the crux of the dilemma. Google has little to lose and much to gain from driverless car technology. For automakers, the equation is just the opposite. Such a misalignment of interests makes mutually beneficial cooperation very difficult for both sides, even when they need each other.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text-13 text parbase section">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In the end, Google will likely need to find a partner with less to lose if it’s going to bring its self-driving cars to market. Reuters mentions Tesla as a possibility. It’s an intriguing idea, particularly since CEO Elon Musk has indicated that he aims to be<a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/ericmack/2014/02/19/elon-musk-tesla-will-be-first-with-autonomous-driving-admits-to-apple-meeting/" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">an early mover in autonomous driving</a>. But the timeframe for mainstream adoption of fully self-driving technology is likely to be measured in decades, not years. Right now, even Tesla probably can’t afford to think that far out. The company has more pressing problems trying to crack the internal-combustion infrastructure monopology. In any case, <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2013/05/07/tesla_self_driving_cars_ceo_elon_musk_prefers_camera_based_autopilot_system.html" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Musk has stated his preference for “autopilot” technology</a> that lets the driver take over when needed.</span></div>
<div class="text text-14 parbase section">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">or now, Google is rumored to be working with <a href="http://cleantechnica.com/2014/05/31/roush-enterprises-company-building-googles-self-driving-cars-think/" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">specialty automotive engineering firm Roush Enterprises</a>, best known for its racing endeavors. Roush is in fact based in the Detroit area, even if it’s not the first name that comes to mind when you think of Detroit. But it seems unlikely to become a mass-production auto manufacturer anytime soon. Another alternative, <a href="http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-05-28/google-s-self-driving-toaster-is-detroit-s-worst-nightmare" style="color: #660033; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">floated</a> recently by industry consultant Edward Niedermeyer, might be a large-scale automotive supplier like Continental or Magna.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="text text-15 parbase section">
<div style="line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">None of which means that the big three—or their overseas counterparts—can rest easy. The implied threat from Google will force them to accelerate their own assisted-driving efforts to show customers that they don’t need to hand over the keys in order to reap the benefits of the robo-driving revolution. In the long run, their best bet is to hope that fully autonomous cars turn out to be less like Google search or Gmail and more like another Google moonshot that looks poised to fall significantly short of the moon: Google Glass.</span></div>

Each idea may not be a fit for every campus, but hopefully it can help start the discussion for new or potential Glass owners. Do you have more ideas? Feel free to tweet them to us at @ValaAfshar and @rellinb.</div>

Incorporate Glass into college athletics. Football, baseball, basketball players, for example, can wear Glass during practice. The coach can give them realtime instructions. Players can view recordings to understand their head and body movements. Also, spectators can join the hangout to experience the sport from the player's first person perspective. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iMA-y_4KwA" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #60b8d7; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">Tennis </a>and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/18/yale-google-glass-quarterback_n_3950332.html" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #60b8d7; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">football QB </a>examples.</li>

<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">4. Professor can wear Glass during lectures and open up a hangout so students can participate remotely. Glass can also provide a back-up resource to the professor to call up more detailed impromptu content as required by student questions. Can also be used by student teachers to help them as they learn to teach.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">5. Experiment with QR codes around campus to display location specific information, such as classes taught in a particular room. Google Glass quickly interprets the QR codes.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">6. Students sitting in lectures can use Glass to help take notes and bookmark important passages, as well as to view extra-classroom content provided to them by the lecturing professor. Glass can provide realtime language translation for foreign students.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">7. Lend to visiting students and prospects for self-guided tours of the campus. Glass will (with added functionality) automatically point out landmarks within the student's vision, explain history, and answer questions.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">8. Invite remote prospective students to tour the campus via a live Hangout with a Glass-wearing guide.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">9. Provide a simulated (virtual reality) experience to students of intense events such as in an operating room, on the athletic field, or in outer space. In these cases, the wearer is the one directly participating in the simulation, rather than watching as someone else participates.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">10. Provide live first-person experience of graduation, by having a student wear Google Glass throughout the ceremony and convocation.</li>
<li style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; direction: ltr; list-style: none outside; margin: 0px 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;">11. Professors can use Glass to receive questions from students during their lectures. <a href="http://www.suffolk.edu/news/19670.php#.U4YDodJdXTc" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #60b8d7; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">Andrew Perlman</a> of <a href="http://www.suffolk.edu/law/faculty/22481.php?instructorID=42" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #60b8d7; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">Suffolk University Law School</a> describes how students who may be reluctant to speak up in class can text their questions directly to the professor who views the texts with Glass. There is another aspect to Google Glass and other wearables in education that has a disruptive effect on what students are taught and how they are tested. <a href="https://twitter.com/S_dF" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #60b8d7; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">Stephen diFilipo</a>, CIO at <a href="http://www.cecil.edu/Pages/default.aspx" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #60b8d7; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_hplink">Cecil College</a>, notes that, "With wearables every test becomes open book. <span style="color: #333333; line-height: 17px;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world thanks to its mobile devices. The iPhone and iPad have proven to be big sellers quarter after quarter, but the gravy train can’t last forever. Apple has to be constantly looking for the next big thing, and it may have found it.</div>
</span><span id="more-444"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</span><div style="color: #333333; line-height: 17px; text-align: justify; text-decoration: none;">
<a href="http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Apple-exploring-cars-medical-devices-to-reignite-5239850.php#page-1" style="color: #333333; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;"></a><a href="http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Apple-exploring-cars-medical-devices-to-reignite-5239850.php#page-1" style="color: #333333; text-decoration: none;">The San Francisco Chronicle</a> is reporting that Apple applied for a patent that would allow users to unlock phones based upon the unique electrical signals from their heart. Apple may be looking into this method as a more reliable biometric identifier. After all, the fingerprint reader on the iPhone 5S was <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/iphone-5s-touch-id-fingerprint-technology-apparently-hacked-in-just-a-day-video-2013-09" style="color: #333333; text-decoration: none;">hacked within a day of release.</a><br /></div>
</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">While the technology may first appear in smartphones, the report states that Apple has much grander ambitions for it. The company may be using this technology to measure “noise turbulence as it applies to blood flow” to predict heart attacks. The technology, reportedly being worked on by THX creator Tomlinson Holman, could very well come to consumer mobile devices allowing consumers to easily track their own blood flow and detect problems without having to see a doctor first.<br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">While medical devices would be a pretty big departure from Apple’s normal operations, cars would be an even bigger departure. Despite that, the report also states that Apple may be looking into acquiring Tesla Motors – the electric car manufacturer founded by Elon Musk. The acquisition would give Apple an outlet into a quickly growing segment of the automobile market and help the company better compete with Google’s own <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/google-confirms-that-android-is-coming-to-cars-2014-01" style="color: #333333; text-decoration: none;">Open Automative Alliance.</a><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 17px; padding: 0px 0px 5px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">While all of this certainly sounds interesting, none of it has been even remotely confirmed by Apple. This is all based solely upon conjecture and meetings Apple has had with various persons and governmental organizations over the past few months. Even so, Apple will need to find something to bring in money as the mobile device market matures in developed markets. Cars and medical devices may be just the thing. Just don’t expect to hear anything about it for at least a few more year<br /><br /><a href="http://www.hitechedge.com/2014/02/19/apple-to-make-medical-devices/" target="_blank">source</a> >>><br /><br /><br /></span></div>

Samsung’s UN85S9 is the best-performing large-screen Ultra HD/4K television we’ve seen so far. But that performance comes at a price. Samsung approached this TV’s design with a no-holds-barred attitude and threw the return-on-investment book out the window.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">The Nexus 10 was of a prerelease version. On March 14, 2013, we took another look at the device, focusing on software support for its high-resolution screen, the now nearly mythical Pogo charger Google announced at release, and checking in on Miracast support; another feature mentioned at release but yet to actually be delivered. We also followed up to see if any performance issues or bugs we experienced at release have been addressed.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">It's the first question anyone asks when they're interested in a tablet: "Is it as good as the current iPad? For the Google Nexus 10, the overall answer is "no." The iPad is still the best tablet experience one can have, thanks to its still unmatched performance and robust app and media ecosystem.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">That said, if you have no interest in owning an Apple product anyway, but are still in the market for a premium tablet, the Nexus 10 should be at or near the top of your list. The choice isn't as cut and dry as it should be, unfortunately. Your other go-to Android option -- the Transformer Infinity -- still has a better back camera, a brighter screen, expandable storage, and comes with a power adapter that's actually proficient at charging the tablet.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">The Nexus 10's stock charger uses its Micro-USB port to charge and -- as it turns out -- that's not the most efficient way to charge a high-end tablet. Overnight charging will be fine, but if you ever need to charge in a hurry, there are currently no other options. Google mentioned a Pogo charger option at release, but has been mum on the subject ever since.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">So why is the Nexus 10 potentially the best Android tablet? Its screen is gorgeous and the sharpest around compared with any tablet, and it is the most comfortable 10-inch tablet to hold in your hand with a durability that ensures you won't immediate blow a gasket if your kids drop it. Furthermore, it's the first tablet to run Android 4.2, which brings with it great new features -- Photo Sphere, which lets you capture a three-dimensional model of a real-world space, is one of the coolest I've ever experienced on a tablet.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">For most, the iPad is still the tablet of choice, but for those looking for an alternative to Apple's much more constrained OS, Google has delivered one of the best yet. Like the Nexus 7 before it, the Nexus 10 marks a significant step toward a much more competitive tablet market, and its design heralds a new paradigm from which all other tablets should consider cribbing ASAP.</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">Just for the record, in the 7-inch tablet space, it's the Nexus 7, not the iPad Mini, that currently reigns as the best small tablet</span></span></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;">
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17px;"><span style="background-color: transparent;">The Google Nexus 10 is one of the best designed tablets yet. At 1.33 pounds, it's fairly light and has a slightly concave shape, with a subtly beveled back design. Thanks to its light weight and smoothly rounded corners the tablet never digs into your palms when held with two hands. The back is a soft, grippy, almost rubbery plastic that not only feels great to hold, but doubles as protection for the tablet. The aforementioned rounded corners have that same rubbery plastic around them. The whole outer shell feels almost like an exoskeleton accessory, specifically designed to protect the delicate tablet organs inside.</span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: small; line-height: normal;">The NSA assembled a team called Geolocation Cell or Geo Cell, with analysts and technicians from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency with the intent of tracking people geographically in real time.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Geo Cell communicates with the CIA and US military around the world, the motto “We Track ’Em, You Whack ’Em.” quickly caught on at Geo Cell as they tracked the cell phones of al-Qaeda and other ‘terror suspects’ around the world.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Joint Special Operations Command(JSOC) called the technology “The Find” and it is reported that the technology developed could track phones even when they were turned off. This is probably due to “feature phones” that may not fully turn off.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For example, Graham said many old “feature phones,” even when they were switched off, would have a baseband processor power up every 10 minutes or so to retrieve SMS messages, but not phone calls. “The moral of this is that just because you define the phone as ‘off’ doesn’t mean that it’s 100% completely ‘off’ all the time,” he said.
- Is That Phone Really Off? – InformationWeek
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The simplest way tracking is done is by remotely installing a hidden app(application) on the phone which transmits the devices GPS location over the internet or even by SMS text messaging, all without the user knowing. The FBI used a similar technique called a “roving bug”, remotely turning on the microphones to listen in on people. There are publicly available apps like this for tracking your children or in case you lose your phone, or it gets stolen.</div>

<b>Design</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From the front, the Style looks rather like a giant Galaxy Tab. Like the Tabs, it's a crisp white, glossy affair with a thick white bezel surrounding the screen. Around the edge is the same chrome-effect band Samsung uses on most of its Galaxy tablets and phones.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: subpixel-antialiased; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; border: 0px; color: black; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 19.984375px; margin: 10px 0px; orphans: auto; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">

If you prefer the metal design of Apple's iPhones and MacBooks, then you probably won't be a fan -- instead, take a look at Apple's skinny new iMacs. I personally found it quite attractive. The white is somewhat overpowering, but it wouldn't look out of place on the side in your living room, rather than being hidden away in a dusty office.</span></div>

It's a solid-feeling base that didn't give much in the way of bending or flex in my brief hands-on. I'll be putting its sturdiness to the test in the full review, though. The screen can angle back slightly, but it has quite a narrow range of motion.</span></div>

It uses the full version of Windows 8, which allows you to install any normal desktop software, rather than rely solely on what you can find in the app store. It's running on a quad-core processor courtesy of AMD. I haven't been able to perform any of my usual benchmarking tests yet, so I'll have to leave my judgement for the review. Hopefully it packs enough juice to tackle the tasks the average family will throw at it in their living room.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
With its glossy white Galaxy Tab stylings, the Ativ One 5 Style will likely only appeal to those of you who like the rest of Samsung's product lineup. It's a fairly compact all-in-one that should sit comfortably on any surface and has enough features to keep a family or student in a dorm satisfied. Let's hope Samsung pairs it with a reasonable price tag.</div>
