Apple To Make Medical Devices?

Written by:  |  Feb 19

Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world thanks to its mobile devices. The iPhone and iPad have proven to be big sellers quarter after quarter, but the gravy train can’t last forever. Apple has to be constantly looking for the next big thing, and it may have found it.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Apple applied for a patent that would allow users to unlock phones based upon the unique electrical signals from their heart. Apple may be looking into this method as a more reliable biometric identifier. After all, the fingerprint reader on the iPhone 5S was hacked within a day of release.

While the technology may first appear in smartphones, the report states that Apple has much grander ambitions for it. The company may be using this technology to measure “noise turbulence as it applies to blood flow” to predict heart attacks. The technology, reportedly being worked on by THX creator Tomlinson Holman, could very well come to consumer mobile devices allowing consumers to easily track their own blood flow and detect problems without having to see a doctor first.
While medical devices would be a pretty big departure from Apple’s normal operations, cars would be an even bigger departure. Despite that, the report also states that Apple may be looking into acquiring Tesla Motors – the electric car manufacturer founded by Elon Musk. The acquisition would give Apple an outlet into a quickly growing segment of the automobile market and help the company better compete with Google’s own Open Automative Alliance.
While all of this certainly sounds interesting, none of it has been even remotely confirmed by Apple. This is all based solely upon conjecture and meetings Apple has had with various persons and governmental organizations over the past few months. Even so, Apple will need to find something to bring in money as the mobile device market matures in developed markets. Cars and medical devices may be just the thing. Just don’t expect to hear anything about it for at least a few more year

Samsung 85″ 4K UHD Hands-on review

Check out our review of the Samsung UN85S9 Ultra HD/4K TV. Samsung’s UN85S9 is the best-performing large-screen Ultra HD/4K television we’ve seen so far. But that performance comes at a price. Microsoft Surface Window RT / 8

OVERVIEW

Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 Pro
Surface with Windows 8 Pro is Microsoft's bold attempt to take on not just the iPad and Android, but the entire laptop market, and bring desktop-strength tablets — a niche-product for decades — to the masses. In doing so, the company has built on its years of experience with pen and touch interfaces, and created a tablet that offers multiple input methods — including fingertip, stylus, and keyboards — right out of the box. Running on Windows 8 Pro, this tablet will be able to run all Windows desktop applications. Microsoft says it will be priced to compete with Ultrabooks, and will also be able to take them on when it comes to performance and versatility.

Samsung to unveil 4-inch 'mini' Galaxy S III on October 11th

JK Shin galaxy s iii
10 Oct 2012  |  JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications, confirmed today that his company will be releasing a four-inch version of the Galaxy S III on October 11th in Germany. Shin announced the news during a meeting with Korean press on Wednesday.
Shin didn't reveal many details about the device, though he said it was spurred by increasing demand for 4-inch devices in Europe. He also noted that it won't be an entry-level handset, telling reporters it will have "full form factor." This would make it an unusual addition to the Android landscape, where high-end devices tend to be 4.5 inches or larger.
"We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany," Shin said. "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini.'"
Shin's confirmation comes just ahead of Apple's rumored iPad mini announcement.
Update: Samsung has confirmed to The Verge that it will hold an event on October 11th. "Galaxy S III mini will come with 4-inch display and we are going to unveil the product tomorrow (Oct 11th)."

Bluetooth headset: Plantronics Voyager Legend

The good: Lighter and less bulky than other boom-style headsets, the Plantronics Voyager Legend has superb audio quality and a well-crafted, comfortable design.
The bad: The Plantronics Voyager Legend's big boom mic arm isn't compact. Its ear tips don't form a tight audio seal.
The bottom line: The $99.99 Plantronics Voyager Legend big boom microphone isn't for the fashion conscious but its superb call audio quality and comfortable fit make it an excellent buy.

Plantronics has been in the communications business since the dawn of the Jet Age and heady days of the Apollo space program. This experience shows in the company’s latest premium Bluetooth headset, the $99.99 Voyager Legend. It’s sure not a modest product name but designed as a follow-up to the Plantronics Voyager Pro Plus, and the Legend does what many might have though was impossible, improve on an already stellar design. In fact, the Voyager Legend offers even better call quality, a smaller size, a more comfortable fit, and a longer battery life. It’s still not inconspicuous compared with more minute headsets but if you do a lot of talking all over town and clear sound is your priority, you’ll want to splurge on this excellent mobile accessory.

m6 : HP Pavilion

The good: The HP Pavilion m6 adds some high-end details from HP's more expensive laptops, while keeping the price down. This is a highly configurable system, with options for discrete graphics and fast CPUs.
The bad: This is just not as solidly built as HP's Envy laptops. The keyboard isn't great, and the low screen resolution feels clunky on a 15-inch laptop.
The bottom line: This near-ultrabook packs in processing and graphics power, along with an optical drive, at a reasonable price. The only real knock against the Pavilion m6 is that some of HP's higher-end systems hardly cost more.

Nokia launches 'last chance' phone

Published on Sep 5, 2012 by Euronews : Nokia is unveiling its most powerful smartphone ever on Wednesday in what may be the struggling Finnish company's last major shot at winning back a market lost to Apple, Samsung and Google.

The stakes are high for both Nokia and Microsoft. The new Lumia runs the latest Windows Phone operating software which Microsoft hopes will rival Apple's iOS and Google's Android which currently dominate the market. If the new phones do not appeal to consumers, it could spell the end for loss-making Nokia and deal a serious blow to Microsoft's attempts to regain its footing in the market.

Nokia has posted more than three billion euros in operating losses in the past 18 months, forcing it to cut 10,000 jobs and pursue asset sales. Its share of the global smartphone market has plunged to less than 10 percent from 50 percent during its heyday, before the iPhone was launched in 2007. Windows phones have only captured 3.7 percent of the global smartphone market, according to Strategy Analytics. Android phones have 68 percent, while Apple has 17 percent.
